Identifying Discontinuities

This is from the assignment on how to identify discontinuities. We were supposed to find out if the functions were continuous or not and if it wasn't continuous to find out the value (s) at which any discontinuity occurred. If you will ignore this mess and take a look at question 1 d) I will explain how I solved it. First I found the number that would give me trouble and it was x=5. So I used direct substitution with 5 and found it yielded 0/0 which is indeterminent. In this case I factored the top so it was (x+5)(x-5)/(x-5) and was able to cross out both (x-5). By doing that it means there is a removable discontinuity at x=5. (ignore where I wrote a hole at (5,10)

Limits - simplifying and rationalization

Today in class we learned two more ways that help us find limits.  The first one was simplifying.  When direct substitution doesn't work out the first time, simplifying the equation would be the next thing to do.  Once you've simplified the equation, use direct substitution with the new and simplified equation.

The second way of finding a limit was through rationalization.  Again, first you try direct substitution and if this does not work, use rationalization.  First you multiply the numerator and the denominator by the conjugate to get rid of the root sign in the numerator (there will be a root sign in the denominator and that's fine).  From there, you can simplify the equation and once that is done, use direct substitution to find your limit. Here is a link that also explains rationalization while showing with an equation step by step what to do:

Welcome to Calculus 30

Welcome to Calculus 30 blog.  The intent of this blog is for students to help each other by posting assignments for those who were absent.

Each blog post should contain the following:

  1. Summary of what topic was presented that day.
  2. Short video of either your explanation or a short clip of my lesson presentation.  (Video should show and example question being completed for others to follow)
  3. A link to an internet video resource or website showing the topic presented that day.  (ex:  Khanacademy.org)
  4. The homework assignment or link to a handout given that day.  (Upload the handout if needed)
